Our social worker visited today to update our homestudy since it needs to be approved every year. Our orignial one was approved on Jan. 24, 2006. I think it is just another way to extract $150 out of you, but whatever.
We are right now currently waiting for a referral of a child. The next person on the list had their homestudy completed on Dec. 22, 2005, so it would seem that we should receive a referral in the next month.
BUT, the Korean government made a major change to their adoption laws this past year. Normally, Korean children were eligable for adoption immediately after birth, resulting in referrals of children who were as young as 2 weeks old. Liam was 3 months old when we received his referral. Beginning in 2007, each child has to be placed up for domestic adoption first for 4 or 5 months and then would be eligable for international adoption. This would greatly increase the age of internationally placed children. They will then be anywhere between 8 months and 1 year old. They also raised the cost $2000, but since we will have a referral before July 1 either way we should be clear of that.
Hopefully, we will receive a referral of a child born in 2006 and everything can proceed as planned. The law would not apply and we could hopefully travel in the spring. If not and we receive a referral of a child born in 2007 then we are looking at May or June and traveling in September or October. That would not be good, but there really isn't anything we can do about it.
